Plants need light for two primary reasons. First, light influences plant growth through the process of photosynthesis. Secondly, light affects seed germination and flowering. As a result, supplemental lighting is sometimes used to control the length of day in order to manipulate the flowering of certain plants.
Plant growth can also be influenced through the addition of supplemental lighting in order to increase photosynthesis and therefore increase plant growth. The key to successfully using supplemental lighting in the greenhouse starts with determining what your goal is, determining the best type of light to allow you to pursue that purpose and then building a custom lighting plan that will provide you with the quality and quantity of light necessary to meet that goal.
